Holga Take Two

Random Holga Street Photography

A user in one of the Holga Camera groups on Flickr saw one of my Holga shots and left a comment. He said the photo looked to be shot in the B (longer exposure) mode than the N (normal) exposure mode. It made all the difference. I placed my camera in N mode and took photos on another roll of film. MUCH better looking!

However, it cost me $35 dollars to get a roll of 35mm and a roll of 120 to be developed, placed on a disk, and get single prints. That’s a lot of money. That’s why I don’t do film that often. However, it has a look that digital just can’t reproduce.

Take this featured photo for example. It’s crap as my mother would say. Or as some would call it, avant-garde or surreal. I took it just to see how it would come out. There’s no purpose to it. Yet, I can tell you it wouldn’t have the same characteristics if I took it in digital.  This one feels like it’s a throwback. Was it taken in 1976 or 2016?  Hard to tell (but 2016 if you have to know). I’d have to digitally add the vignetting and the blurring to it if it were a digital photo.

If there are any Holga users, please feel free to drop me some hints and pointers.

My First Holga Shots

Holga Photography - Savannah NWR

I finally got the roll of film in my Holga camera developed last week. Did I mention I have one? I know I mused about getting one. This is the best shot. I scanned them because the developer didn’t do that at developing time.  I had thought I’d ask.  I’m be more forceful next time.

I’m so hesitant about film because we couldn’t afford film and my mother wasn’t too keen letting me waste film.  I can see her response now about these photos.  She’d be upset I wasted a whole roll of film.  As for my dad, he’s all meh about it.  Not excited at the photos, but understands in order to understand the camera, it takes some practice.

As a result of my getting these shots developed and my other toy camera shots, I’ve created a Toy Photography album on Flickr:

I still want to get my La Sardina working again. And maybe one day I can get a Diana, too?

La Sardina Users Help Needed.
Posted on January 26th, 2016 @ 5:13 pm

About 4 years ago, I bought a La Sardina camera. I love the camera for the interesting film shots that come out. However, I haven’t been able to use it for a while. It won’t advance forward easily and I can’t load film in it.

Seems I’m not the only one, as this video shows. It illustrates my issue perfectly:

Sardina troubleshoot from Andreea Ţimpea on Vimeo.

I can’t seem to find an answer online. I really don’t want to get another one. Figured I’d try placing a Bat Signal out there to see if I can find anyone to help me or talk La Sardina in general. Seems we’re all busy posting to social media, but never TALKING to others any more.

Hi, my name is Shawn, and I am a photography addict.
Posted on January 23rd, 2016 @ 5:49 pm

At the moment, I have a new Holga HL-C lens for my digital camera AND a Holga 12S Flash on order. I had to get new ones since I tried to clean my old HL-C lens and can’t get it back together properly. I can’t find my other Holga 12S Flash flash.

I also have on order a cheap set of Fisheye, Wide Angle, and Macro Camera Lenses for for my OLD iPhone.

At the moment, I wish I could afford Adobe Lightshop. I wish I could get a new La Sardina camera to replace my current one that doesn’t work. I’d also love to get a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II fixed camera lens for my expensive camera. I have it on a wish list. I’d also love to have a lightbox.

I wish I could master the concept of Bokeh.  I understand it in terms of what it is, but sadly, like crocheting, I can’t get it down.  I’ve love to do fancy shapes like snowflakes.

While I mention what I wish I could do, let me mention what I CAN do:

I know how to use colored plastic bags and dryer sheets as a diffuser or a filter:
Scooter's inner Hulk

I LOVE the Hipstamatic app:
Spring in Savannah

I’m having fun with a Polaroid Cube+:
Ciao Maddio's!

Overall, I wish I was a better photographer than I am. I wish my photos looked as great as some of the others I see out there. I wish I could afford the tools I need to be better. I wish I could afford film.

To my fellow photographers out there, what tips and tricks do you have?  I’d love to know more about what you do.

Flying Pucks

Savannah Hockey Classic 2016

In Savannah, we do have an annual hockey tournament called the Savannah Hockey Classic.  I thought it would be cool to go.  I never went to the Thrashers games in Atlanta.  Not because I didn’t want to go, but because I didn’t have any friends to go with me and the Philips Arena area scared me at night.  At least with the Braves’ games and Turner Field, I felt like there was enough to protect me either when I drove myself or took the shuttle.

I did got to a hockey game once before.  I saw a South Carolina Stingrays years ago.  Nicki’s roommate had a bunch of tickets and so Nicki, the roommate, the roommate’s boyfriend at the time, our friend Hai, our brother Matthew, and I all drove to Charleston to see the game.  We had a lot of fun that night.

I thought it would cool to see some hockey again.  My grandfather did hockey along with my uncle as my cousin was growing up.  If anyone says Nashville is NOT a hockey town, I point to them as Exhibits A-C as hockey people in Nashville.  The only place I lived with a ice skating rink as at Ft. Bragg.  I was HORRIBLE at skating.  Always fell on my butt.  I can’t ice skate.

I’m digressing here.  Hockey in in the family blood.  I decided to go see a game.  I got Melinda to go with me and we went and had fun. It’s a 2 night event, but we went to the in-state rivalry night. Florida State vs. Florida followed by Georgia Tech vs. Georgia

Now, let me say that they aren’t kidding when they say watch out for flying pucks.  At one point, a puck fly into our seating area and landed at the feet of a kid during the Florida State-Florida game.  He was so thrilled to get a puck.  Seems our area attracted pucks. During the Georgia Tech-Georgia game, a puck flew into the stands again.  This once had a bit more force to it.  I saw it coming; it had my name on it.  It ended up hitting my camera.  The camera is OK, but the puck now has a slash in it where it hit my camera’s lens filter on it.  I have a game used puck now.

I think people were there more to see the Georgia rivalry than the Florida rivalry, but there were some Gator and ‘Noles fans in the building. Both games were blowouts. FSU defeated Florida and UGA defeated GT. Overall, the night was fun. I’ll have to go next year.

I wish I could see an NHL game. I guess since Atlanta’s team is now gone, I’m a Nashville Predators fan. Oh to get back to Nashville again!

Well, I didn’t win Powerball.
Posted on January 10th, 2016 @ 6:49 pm

But, neither did anyone else! I’ll buy a couple of tickets, but I’m not going to buy a lot.  Chances are against me, but it’s nice to dream.

If I were to win, I would first visit financial planners and get a lawyer. I’d set up a trust and transfer my property into it.  I would pay off my debts. I’d get my father out of debt. I’d get my siblings out of debt.  I would get a new car.  Not an expensive car, but something.

As for spoiling myself? I would see me buying a new home for myself.  Probably several properties.  Again, the titles would be in the name of my trust. I’d get a place in Atlanta.  I’d get a place in Richmond Hill.  Hell, I’d buy homes for my siblings, only to place the properties into a trust and rent it out to them for $1.00 a year.

I would also be buying a lot of photography gear. Several new cameras.  Lots of accessories.

Looking at my job – I don’t know if I would quit it just yet.  However, I would love to travel. At the moment, I am itching to travel again.

Until I win the lottery, I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing.

Pinterest Attempts.
Posted on January 9th, 2016 @ 3:04 pm

Attempting to cook again.I’m not a regular Pinterest user, but I do have an account. Sometimes, things work out.  Sometimes, they don’t.  I mainly pin recipes and crafts. Today, I am attempting the Crockpot Buffalo Chicken Tater Tot Casserole. At the moment, it’s in the slow cooker and has been in it for about an hour.  The only thing I seemed to have messed up so far was using a teaspoon of pepper instead of only a ¼ of a teaspoon the recipe called for.  I hope this pans out.  It looked good to me.

Nothing has changed too much in the past week or so. 😆  That’s a good thing.  I don’t really have much more to say. Maybe if I win the Powerball I’ll say more.  However, I wouldn’t post until AFTER I talk to a financial adviser.

So, to end this post about Pinterest attempts, here’s the best part about Pinterest: the fails!

Oh, I remember something else!  The other day, I got a poll call as a feeler on should current Georgia Secretary of State, Brian Kemp, should run for governor of the state.  I answered it, but quite bummed it wasn’t a poll for the Republican Presidential candidates.  I would have had fun with that one!

Edit 6:49 PM: Casserole was good.  My sister absolutely loved it.

Happy New Year!

365 Days - 2016

Happy New Year!  May your 2016 be a blessed one.

I have no clue how my year is going to go.  I decided to do a Project 365 for this year, or in the case of 2016, a Project 366.  I haven’t done one in 3 years.   I thought now would be a good time.  Theme for this year is anything goes.

I have a cruise planned for this year.  8 days away.  No telling where else I will travel. I have 4 extra days off this year from work to make up for the 4 I had to lose last year for work purposes.  Just a time shift, really.

I would love to get into a relationship, but at this point in my life, I wonder if I really do want one.  I like going off and begin the free spirit that I am.  I’d love to have kids, too, but again, how would that impacting the free spirit that I am?  If I am anything like my mother, I know I wouldn’t let it impact me.

I should also be getting my car and student loans paid off this year.  6 years for the car loan and 8 years since I started paying on the student loan.  Both will be paid off earlier than expected. Car loan should have been completed in July 2016 and the student loan in 2018.

At the moment, things are looking up for me.  Today’s project has been working on my office – cleaning it up for the new bed I am getting for it tomorrow. Doesn’t sound like much, but it’s exciting in its own way.  I will also have to finish taking down the Christmas tree.

Overall, I just wanted to wish you a Happy New Year!
